Water Systems
Tolman Engineering has obtained vast experience
completing water system projects. We have completed a large number of
studies for water improvement projects, obtained water supply permits, and
designed and provided construction oversight for water supply systems,
water distribution systems, and pumping stations. Refer to the specific
sections below for a description of our experience in a given area below.

Water StudiesTolman
Engineering has completed a significant number and wide range of of water
studies. Each study resulted in a detailed report usually in USDA Rural
Development format, which includes environmental resources,
alternative solutions, cost estimates, a recommended alternative
and an implementation schedule. The studies are vital to our
clients planning process and used to implement a successful
project and/or obtain grant funding.
Tolman Engineering is a highly technical engineering firm and is committed to
using computer software to develop planning level models of water
system components when completing a water study. Usually, EPANET, a
software package developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection
Agency is utilized. EPANET provides an efficient means to vary
system component and compare results allowing selection of the
most appropriate equipment for a given alternative.

Water SupplyTolman
Engineering has assisted in development and permitted a
number of water supply sources. During the development and/or
permitting process we work closely with the agencies to assure
issues are adequately addressed and the process moves along in a
timely fashion. Because of our ability to work efficiently and
effectively with the agencies we are highly recommended by
resource agencies.

Water Distribution
Tolman Engineering has extensive experience working closely with clients (private and government) to complete planning, engineering, permitting, and inspection for water distribution projects. This includes establishment of benefit/improvement districts when required. During the planning and design phases all components of a proposed distribution system are model and analyzed with EPANET, a software package developed by the Environmental Protection Agency. Knowledgeable implementation of EPANET provides for very efficient design with the ability to make changes and provide alternatives for review with minimal time to project costs.
Our services have resulted in the installation of about 60 miles of water main. As a result, we have become known by local authorities and municipalities for providing high quality design drawings and contract documents that receive minimal change orders during construction. We have also developed an extensive tract record of completing millions of dollars of construction directly with municipal staff using self-help (force account). This ability to work directly with municipal staff to construct distribution projects has allowed municipalities to save 25 to 50 percent on construction cost
as compared with completing the project with private contractors.

Pumping Stations
Tolman Engineering has completed a number of pump station projects
and is currently in design for a number more. Each project involved a detailed
investigation of the area to be served, which included estimating
the current level of water demand and projecting the future level
of water demand. An EPANET model of the proposed pump station and
distribution system served by the pump station was created to
select pumps that best fit the need of the project. In other
words, select pumps that provide adequate flow and pressure while
providing high efficiency.
